Murder your darlings

Funny title for a blog post about wedding photography. Bear with me… In his 1914 lecture “on Style” Arthur Quiller Couch, the writer and literary critic better known as Q,  said; ‘If you here require a practical rule of me, I will present you with this: Whenever you feel an impulse to perpetrate a...

Wedding Photography at Haselbury Mill, Lisa and Jeff

In the past couple of months I’ve had the pleasure of assisting at a couple of weddings for a friend of mine, wedding photographer Rex Preston. The first of these was a wedding at Haselbury Mill in Somerset.  Lisa And Jeff’s wedding was a laid back affair in a lovely setting with great weather. On...

A wedding in Bristol, Sophie and Mike

A few weeks ago I popped over the bridge for a wedding in Bristol. My destination no 4 Clifton, The Rodney hotel and Sophie and Mike’s intimate  and relaxed wedding. Sophie and Mike had plans for a low key ceremony and then a reception for their closest family and friends. When I spoke with Sophie...

The last shot of the night

The key to documentary wedding photography is telling a story. It’s not just aimless snapping. Though it has to be said that sometimes I do get the occasional eyebrow raised at the odd things I point the camera at but there’s method in my madness. Generally I have a plan of sorts though that plan...

A Village Hall Wedding, Rose and Greg.

I haven’t often had the opportunity to shoot a village hall wedding, just a few times but I’ve always enjoyed them. Village Hall weddings tend to be quite intimate and allow for the couples to stamp themselves on the venue. This was certainly the case at Rose and Greg’s wedding recently in Silverdale and Whitmore....

Landscape photography in Scotland

And now for something completely different. As promised in the last post here’s the first in what I hope will be an ongoing series of posts about other non wedding related stuff. It will all be photography related, after all that’s what I do, for couples, for commercial clients or just for myself. Don’t worry...

Emma and Mike. Huntsham Court Wedding Photography

I’ve seen a fair amount of wedding photography from Huntsham Court in Devon , it’s one of those venues that I always liked the look of but never had the opportunity to shoot at myself. But at last the day came! Emma and Mike live on a canal boat in London but Emma grew up...

A wedding at the Grove, Watford.

Back in 2016 I shot a wedding for a couple called Aisha and Ali. You can see that Polhawn Fort wedding a bit further back in the blog. It was a great pleasure then to receive an email a year or so later from Aisha’s sister Mariam asking whether I remembered her, of course I...

Wedding Pictures. Do something with them.

This is a plea! I’m begging you, do something with your wedding pictures. So often I wonder what people do with their pictures after the big day. Albums are expensive things to make and buy and quite often just out of reach for newlyweds.  It’s a shame. But there are other things you can do....

Black and white wedding photography

If you have spent any amount of time looking through my site you will have realised by now that I like black and white photography, especially black and white wedding photography.  There are several reasons for this I think, other than just the obvious ‘black and white suits documentary wedding photography‘ which of course it...

Michael Riley Photography

I am a a multi award winning UK and destination wedding photographer. Based in Devon, I offer wedding coverage throughout the UK and anywhere else in the world for couples who like my work and approach to a wedding.

My wedding photography is entirely unposed, natural & candid. My style is documentary wedding photography or reportage wedding photography which means that I don't intervene in the day for the sake of a shot. I don't pose, interfere or otherwise fuss and faff. Everything is relaxed, laid back and fun allowing for those natural moments to come through and be recorded as memories. You get all the moments observed not orchestrated. If you like the sound of this get in touch via my contact page.
